Hidden Camping Gems Locals Love Near Kelowna

Family Enjoying Camping Vacation By Lake Together

There are two kinds of campers in Kelowna.

There are the planners, who had their BC Parks account open months ago, coffee in hand, ready to grab the perfect lakefront site the second reservations opened.

Then there are the “we could probably find somewhere” campers. You know the ones. They toss a tent, cooler, bag of chips, and one questionable camping chair into the vehicle, then head toward the hills with optimism and no real plan.

Luckily, Kelowna has options for both! While popular spots like Bear Creek, Fintry, and Okanagan Lake Provincial Park get plenty of attention, the area around Kelowna is also home to quieter recreation sites, small lakes, fishing spots, and rustic campgrounds that feel a little more tucked away.

And those are the ones we’ll be exploring below.

Hydraulic Lake

If your ideal camping weekend involves fishing, fresh air, and a little bit of “we’re definitely out of town now” energy, Hydraulic Lake is worth adding to your list.

Located southeast of Kelowna, Hydraulic Lake is a first-come-first-serve rustic camping area with 30 campsites. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to bring what you need, settle in, and enjoy a quieter pace.

You’re not coming here for resort-style amenities. You’re coming for the lake, the trees, the camp stove breakfast, and the satisfaction of being somewhere that still feels a bit under the radar.

Hydraulic Lake is especially good for campers who like the idea of being near water without being in the middle of a busy beach crowd. Bring a fishing rod, a good book, a warm hoodie for the evening, and enough snacks to account for the fact that everything tastes better outside.

Postill Lake

Postill Lake is another great option for campers who want a simple, quiet escape without driving too far from Kelowna.

It’s described as a small recreation site on a good fly-fishing lake with a cartop boat launch and limited maintenance. Translation: don’t expect luxury but do expect charm.

This is a good pick if your version of camping includes early mornings, still water, and that peaceful moment when the only thing you can hear is a bird you can’t identify. It’s also a solid option for campers who like low-key lake days.

Bring a small paddle craft if conditions allow, pack layers for cooler spring nights, and keep your setup simple.

James Lake

James Lake is a small, peaceful choice for campers who want to trade the busy Okanagan Lake scene for something more tucked into the hills.

The official listing notes that James Lake has seven campsites and asks visitors to respect the environment and pack out what they pack in. That “pack out what you pack in” reminder is especially important at smaller recreation sites. These places stay beautiful because campers treat them well.

James Lake is a lovely option for people who enjoy the slower side of camping. It’s not about packing the weekend with activities. It’s about sitting by the water, making something simple for dinner, and realizing you haven’t checked your phone in a few hours. Honestly, that might be the whole point.

Browne Lake Park

Browne Lake is a great pick for campers who like their hidden gems with a bit of backcountry simplicity.

This recreational camping site on the southeast side of the lake has approximately six spots, with outhouses, fire rings, and picnic tables. The site is user-maintained, and there’s no charge for use. That makes Browne Lake Park a more rustic option, but also a rewarding one for the right camper. The lake is mainly used for trout fishing and boating, and there’s a boat launch at the site.

Because it’s small, you’ll want to have a backup plan, especially on any upcoming long weekends. But, if you do find a spot, it can feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special.

This is a great reminder that “hidden gem” doesn’t always mean secret. Sometimes it just means small, simple, and easy to overlook when everyone else is chasing the big-name campground.

Swalwell Lake

Swalwell Lake, also known as Beaver Lake, is a favourite-style Okanagan escape because it offers that classic lake-in-the-hills feeling.

The recreation site has 14 campsites and is popular for fishing, with good hiking nearby. This is a nice choice for campers who want a weekend that feels active but not over planned. You can fish, wander, explore nearby trails, nap in a camp chair, or spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to get the perfect fire going (assuming fires are allowed).

And that’s the big note: always check current fire restrictions before you go. BC Wildfire Service keeps updated information on fire prohibitions and restrictions, which is especially important as the weather warms up.

Evely Recreation Site

If you’re willing to head a little farther along the Okanagan, Evely Recreation Site is the kind of place that makes you understand why people are so protective of their favourite camping spots.

There are 48 campsites with a listed camping fee, offering RV and tenting sites right on Okanagan Lake, with short walking trails, a small boat launch, and a swimming beach. This one has that classic Okanagan magic: lake views, water access, and enough rustic simplicity to still feel like camping.

It’s a good fit for campers who want to be near the lake but don’t necessarily want the most obvious, busiest option. Just make sure you bring drinking water, check access before you leave, and prepare for a more self-sufficient setup.
